The Last Storyteller Essay Example for Free

The Last Storyteller Essay Before the Europeans colonized America various clans of Native Americas selected narrators to keep the clans history alive. In â€Å"This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona†, by Sherman Alexie an odd kid named Thomas Builds-the-Fire holds the title of narrator. This short story is about an excursion Thomas takes with his old companion Victor to guarantee Victor’s father’s remains from Phoenix, Arizona and take them back to their booking in Spokane. The story eventually depicts the strain among Victors and Thomas’s fellowship. Alexie utilizes Thomas and his kinship with Victor to show that not every person fits in with what we call the normal practices. Thomas Builds-the-Fire is not quite the same as different young men from his booking. In the initial scene Victor is remaining in line at the exchanging post. He has a hundred dollar check close by to cover make a trip costs to discover his dad when he sees Thomas at a magazine rack. At the point when Thomas approaches Victor and they start a discussion about his dad. All the Indians at the exchanging post are astounded Victor is really conversing with him. In â€Å"This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona† viewpoint is appeared by â€Å"All different Indians gazed, astounded that Victor was in any event, conversing with Thomas. No one conversed with Thomas any longer since he recounted to a similar damn stories again and again again† (Alexie 171). This is the point at which we first discover that Thomas isn't acknowledged by his by his own kin and is viewed as a pariah. Thomas isn't paid attention to and isn't listened too on the grounds that he appreciates relati ng story’s of his clans past. Thomas makes a suggestion to Victor consenting to help with costs for his excursion to recover his father’s remains on the off chance that he is permitted to come. Victor hesitantly consents to Thomas’s terms. The young men sat close to one another on the trip alongside a little white lady who had the seat by the window. In â€Å"This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona† character is appeared by â€Å"â€Å"Excuse me, miss,† Thomas inquired. â€Å"Are you an acrobat or something†Ã¢â‚¬ (Alexie 173)? Victor in the end rings in toward the end yet it is Thomas’s bluntness that began the discussion. In this scene not exclusively does the creator show that Thomas is unique however that the acrobat is irregular too. In â€Å" This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona† character is appeared by â€Å"She was occupied with winding her body into pretzels. She was flexible† (Alexie 173). A great many people on a plane would think that its somewhat awkward to be sitting close to somebody bending their body! When Thomas and Victor had recovered Victor’s dad’s remains they headed to the bank and recovered the 300 dollars from his dads account. While out and about back to there old neighborhood Spokane Victor describes the account of when Thomas flew. In â€Å"This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona† point of view is demonstrated when â€Å"Once, he hopped off the top of the ancestral school and fluttered his arms like an insane falcon. Also, he flew. For a subsequent he drifted, suspended over the various Indian young men, who were excessively brilliant or to frightened to bounce too† (Alexie 175). Thomas fell and broke his arm in two spots, yet Thomas did what no other kid would do, despite the fact that they all wished as well. This isn't something numerous individuals would do however the creator utilizes this to show that Thomas isn't influenced by different people’s sentiments. While the young men pass through Nevada the scene is depicted. In â€Å"This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona† setting is demonstrated when â€Å"Thomas and Victor had been stunned at the absence of creature life, at the nonattendance of water, of movement† (Alexie 176). The setting of Nevada is barren and nobleman of life. There are infrequently any creatures that are seen during the day. Since Nevada is one major desert a large portion of the creatures are nighttime they come out after the sun has set and the abusive warmth has lived. The image of the Nevada desert is utilized to depict the sentiment of being separated from everyone else. The setting is utilized to show the sentiment of being distant from everyone else and how the two young men are encountering it. Alexia prevails with regards to depicting a message about not fitting in with accepted practices in her short story â€Å"This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona†. All through the story Thomas shows that he is unique and that he isn’t going to change for anyone. Thomas notwithstanding being confronted with numerous difficulties, decisions, torments and in any event, being beat up never wavered in his convictions. Being unique and not adjusting the accepted practices isn't a simple thing for individuals to do and this is the thing that Alexia was attempting to depict.

Death Penalty Essay Example for Free

Capital punishment Essay Capital punishment has been an unavoidable piece of human culture and its lawful framework for quite a long time, viewed as a vital hindrance to perilous wrongdoings and an approach to free the network from risky crooks. In any case, later on this kind of discipline came to be viewed as a wrongdoing against humanistic standards by many, and its legitimacy in the lawful framework has been addressed. As of not long ago, the discussion seethes on. In any case, I’m here to reveal to you that capital punishment is the correct activity !! Foundation: The main built up capital punishment laws date as far back as the Eighteenth Century B.  C. E. in the Code of King Hammurabi of Babylon, which arranged capital punishment for 25 unique violations. Capital punishment was additionally part of the Fourteenth Century B. C. E. s Hittite Code; in the Seventh Century B. C. s Draconian Code of Athens, which made demise the main discipline for all wrongdoings; and in the Fifth Century B. C. s Roman law of the Twelve Tablets. Capital punishments were done by such methods as torturous killing, suffocating, pounding the life out of, consuming alive, and impalement. In the Tenth Century A. D. , hanging turned into the typical strategy for execution in Britain. In the next century, William the Conqueror would not permit people to be hanged or in any case executed for any wrongdoing, aside from in the midst of war. This pattern would not last, for in the Sixteenth Century, under the rule of Henry VIII, upwards of 72,000 individuals are evaluated to have been executed. Some regular techniques for execution around then were bubbling, consuming at the stake, hanging, decapitating, and drawing and quartering. Executions were completed for such capital offenses as wedding a Jew, not admitting to a wrongdoing, and injustice. The quantity of capital violations in Britain kept on ascending all through the following two centuries. By the 1700s, 222 wrongdoings were deserving of death in Britain, including taking, chopping down a tree, and looting a bunny warren. In light of the seriousness of capital punishment, numerous juries would not convict litigants if the offense was not genuine. This lead to changes of Britains capital punishment. From 1823 to 1837, capital punishment was killed for more than 100 of the 222 wrongdoings deserving of death. What's more, in America more than 38 states utilize capital punishment. Presently that discloses to me that practically half of the United States utilizes he capital punishment and even john Haynes from the book â€Å"the passing penalty† even concurs with me..!!! Mistakesâ now let’s proceed onward to botches , as we as a whole know in those days a few a very long time back we didn’t have the innovation that we do have now. Yet, stand by since we have the world’s most intelligent individuals, well probably a few. They can guarantee you that we will give right D. N. A. answers!!! What's more, if I somehow happened to give you a level of what number of we have gotten right I would state 100%. Cost of death versus life in jail: So for the situation for cash which is better, I would state that capital punishment is much preferred and it’s less expensive over keeping the detainee there and experiencing a great many preliminaries after preliminary, I mean this could continue for a considerable length of time and even up to months!!! Capital punishment cost the administration 1. 5 million-5. 1 million dollars. The expense of keeping the detainee $22,218 to 50,000 every year ! All in all I realize that capital punishment may cost all the more yet would we truly like to have our citizen’s life in harm's way, I know I don’t. Any thought of the crime percentage undoing would get reasonable if the crime percentage in any event for murders goes forcefully down. At present, in any case, the death penalty fills in as a significant obstruction in transit of hoodlums prepared to take another people life.

Using their geometry, they were able to survey and preserve the layout and ownership of farmland, which was flooded annually by the Nile River. Through the use of ancient irrigation techniques and technology the Egyptians were able to water the growing fields? They invented a tooled called the â€Å"shaduf† and used it, along with canals, to move the water to where it was required. The shaduf is a bucket, bag or basket at the end of a pole. It balanced on a frame and has a heavy weight attached at the other end. The user pulled down to fill the bucket from the water source (the Nile) and lets the weight pulled the bucket of water up. It is then swung, or pivoted, around to the higher ground and emptied into a canal that went out to the field of crops. The fields were then reaped with that historically well known piece of farming technology, the ever-faithful sickle. Fences, a low diction play by August Wilson, expresses the complex relationship between a father and his sons. Troy Maxson, once a baseball star on a Negro League, is now envious of his son Cory who dreams of having a successful football career. Troy also worries that Cory will be treated with the same disrespect that he (Troy) once was during his baseball career. Lyons, Troys eldest son, is completely misunderstood by Troy, mostly because of his refusal to get a â€Å"real† job and his drive to become a musician. Wilson references stories from Troys past to convey the reason behind Troys frustration and actions toward his children. To begin to understand Troy, we must observe the tumultuous relationship between Troy and his father.†¦show more content†¦He seems to care a bit more about his children and puts his family first before his job, but throughout the play he pushes his children out of his home a little faster than most families would now-a-days, which is re miniscent of his father. Troy has followed what he knows and is raising his family the only way he knows how (Wilson 1310-1313). Of the two sons, Lyons seems to be the one that Troy is the most frustrated with. Troy cannot understand any of his actions, especially his love for jazz music. He refers to it as â€Å"Chinese music†, hinting that it is something foreign to him that he cannot comprehend. Lyons music is only one of the many issues his father has with him. Lyons does not have a real job, like Troy. Instead, he plays music where and when he can and his girlfriend supports the two of them. He claims he cant get a decent job anywhere and says he doesnt want to â€Å"be punching nobodys time clock†. Lyons frequently asks Troy for money â€Å"Well, hell, since you mentioned it... let me have ten dollars.†. This irritates Troy because he works hard for his money only to hand it over to his son who refuses to find a job, though Lyons does eventually pay him ba ck. Troy doesnt understand why Lyons turned out this way, he surely didnt raise him to become jobless and play music, nor did he raise any of his sons to beg for money, especially from their father. Some people are heroes because they never cheat; some are treated like heroes because they are sincere with themselves. The last is the most difficult thing to do because the modern world demands wearing masks in order to hide real views or intentions. Heroes set standards of behavior and denote the style of dealing with troubles in ambiguous situations. Heroes are highly precious for those who vote for the perfection of ideas and healthy set of mind. Therefore, such people as Nelson Mandela, Margaret Thatcher and Elon Musk transform the world on different levels; they can be counted as heroes because their devotedness to work and worldviews prove that.

Importance of Communication and Personal Participation in an Organization Essays

Importance of Communication and Personal Participation in an Organization Essays Importance of Communication and Personal Participation in an Organization Essay Importance of Communication and Personal Participation in an Organization Essay During my time working as a Sprint PCS telesales superviser, I believed that the concepts of communication, as well as, personal participation, were the most critical components of any relationship and also equally the most difficult tasks facing any staff leaders or people in positions of authority. While I have rarely considered communications in the terms described by what we have learned in class this semester, I have definetly pondered the challenges and processes through which communication is expressed throughout professional organizations. In the business setting, I was most comfortable communicating individually with my employees, as well as, various customers and citizens who were interested in our companies services. I believe that my personality, interpersonal skills, educational training, and personal life experiences have enabled me to effectively communicate with people in meaningful ways. In class we learned that during oral communication situations the exchange of information between the sender and receiver is immediate, personal, and both parties have the advantage of interpreting non-verbal cues and clarifying verbal exchanges. One-on-one communication also provides the unique opportunity to build a meaningful relationship between the sender and receiver because of its personal nature. I am convinced that the foundation of any beneficial relationship is trust; and, trust is the result of effective communication. I was always told that trust is an investment that you have to be willing to make in others and that others are willing to make in me. It is fair to say that this form of communication enabled me to perform my duties accuretly and be a successful leader and supervisor.

Service Line Development Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Service Line Development - Term Paper Example Self paying patients have increased from 5 to 8%. These changes have been accompanied by a reduction in revenue from $461.5 million to $427 million – a 7.5% decline. This decline has led to a decline in the hospital’s profit margin from $23.075 million to a negative of $1.495 million – a decline of 106.5%. This decline in revenue appears to have been initiated by the loss of the Obstetrics program and the erosion of general surgery volumes. The number of discharges, patient days, ADC, Surgeries, OP visits and ED visits. The only increase is related to ALOS which increased from 4.0 to 4.3. Zuckerman et al (2002) noted that mandatory health maintenance organizations (HMO) programs have had a positive impact on both adults and children and has resulted in less dependence on emergency room for medical care. There is an increase in the use of preventative care. Zuckerman et al (2002) also pointed to differences in access between people enrolled in Medicaid managed car e and low-income privately insured people. This difference seems to have positively impacted the percentage of patients using Medicaid and Medicare while negatively impacting the percentage of patients using the facility who are insured. Gaynor and Haas-Wilson (1999, p. ... The memos and telephone conversations seem to be pointing towards the legislative mindset of reducing payments to hospitals. There are also changes in how physicians are reimbursed and this has implications for health care in the county. However, although everyone is affected Robert Holland who is not directly employed in the health sector appears to be the only person who knows how to impact the legislative changes to the health care policy. There is an urgent need for improvement in health care policies and the suggestion made by Robert Holland to the CEO – Morgan Reece of working more closely with the Hospital Political Action Committee in order to frame feedback to the legislators is a good one. A member of the hospital board - Dr. Joint, who does not work at the Trinity Community Hospital is concerned that Congress wants to either reduce reimbursement or keep it at the same level while opening the doors of medical facilities to millions. Dr. Joint indicates that the payme nt to physician is not keeping up with cost increases and so the hospital will not be able to recruit any new doctors. This seems to have been the problem when the Obstetrics service was discontinued at the hospital. There is obviously a shortage of doctors which can have crippling effects on health services. This will also turn people away from public health facilities as they will prefer to pay more for private services in order to ensure that they receive quality health care. It therefore means that those who cannot afford private care are the only ones who will visit the hospital. Currently, only some basic provisions can be dealt with in relation to

Troll Brothers SWOT Analysis Essay Example for Free

Troll Brothers SWOT Analysis Essay Toll Brothers designs, builds, markets and arranges financing for single family homes in middle and high income residential communities. It caters to ‘move-up’, ‘empty-nester’ and ‘age-qualified’ homebuyers. During the five years ended 2006, the company delivered 33,338 homes from 570 communities, including 8,601 homes from 350 communities in fiscal 2006 (Toll Brothers website, 2008). Its large scale of operations increases Toll Brothers bargaining power and helps it compete effectively against regional players. However, slowdown in the US housing market has resulted in lower demand for the companys products and has adversely affected its operations (Stabile and Whitten, 2000). The company offers comprehensive services for its customers. The company offers an extensive selection of colors and designs, such as marble and hardwood floors, Corian, granite, and a variety of selections for the homes exterior. The company’s offering of one-stop shopping enables home buyers to make all of their selections, both customization and color selections, in one location. In most of its single-family detached-home communities, the company offer at least four different house floor plans, each with several substantially different architectural styles. During the past year, the company introduced 112 new single-family detached models, 82 new single-family attached models and 81 new condominium models. In the homebuilding industry, consolidation has taken place with the largest builders making significant gains in market share. In 1991, the top ten builders built just 9% of the houses in the US, but by 2001, through a combination of internal growth and acquisition, the number had risen to 18%; in 2003, the number was above 20% (Hassell, Wong, Houser, Knopman and Bernstein, 2003). Homebuilding is an industry where small builders are having increasing difficulty in competing with their larger competitors. Compared to this, bigger companies like Toll Brothers could acquire smaller players to increase its share of the market. WORKS CITED Hassell, S., Wong, A., Houser, A., Knopman, D. Bernstein, M. themebeo Epic of Beowulf Essay - Style, Structure and Theme

Style, Structure and Theme of Beowulf  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚      A consideration of the stylistic features in the classic poem Beowulf involves a study of the poetic verse, the vocabulary, alliteration, litotes, simile, kennings, variation and double-meaning or ambiguity. A consideration of the structure and the theme of the poem involve a wide diversity of opinion on the subject.    First, let us talk about style. The poetic conventions used by this poet include two half-lines in each verse, separated by a caesura or pause. The half-lines are joined by the oral stressing of alliterative words in the half-lines, both consonants and vowels (Tharaud 34). â€Å"At least one of the two stressed words in the first half-line, and usually both of them, begin with the same sound as the first stressed word of the second half-line† (Donaldson 67). When a word was stressed in the first half-line, its alliterative counterpart was stressed in the following half-line; the words could either complement each other, like holy/heaven or sin/enemy, or they could contrast each other like happy/wretched or warm/winter.    Oft Scyld Scefing   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   sceapena preatum monegum maegpum  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   meodo-setla ofteah (4-5)    The repetition of the â€Å"s† sound in line 4 and of the â€Å"m† sound in line 5 illustrate alliteration, and this occurs throughout the poem, providing to the listener what the rhyme of modern-day poetry provides – an aesthetic sense of   rightness or pleasure.    The vocabulary of the poem is remarkable in several ways. First of all, about one-third of the vocabulary is compound words. For the concept of   â€Å"the sea† there are 50 different compounds; likewise there are 50 compounds ... ...d Bloom. Equal protection and due process clauses Essay

In natural rights philosophy, a limited government is a system restricted to protecting natural rights and that does not interfere with other aspects of life. Learning from the revolution in Great Britain, colonists created this country?s limited government in an attempt to protect their country from abuse of power. Both equal protection of the law and due process of law help limited government in preventing the abuse of power. Due process of law is one of our country?s oldest constitutional principles. Taking a cue from the Magna Carta, it requires that the actions of government be conducted according to the rule of the law. It is the most important protection against arbitrary rule. Government officials were now just as accountable for their actions as anyone else. A police officer, or even the president, were now held to the same standards as the average citizen. By adding due process of law to the constitution in 1791, founders basically shot down the threat of corruption by stating that no government can be above the law. Much like due process of law, Equal protection of the law is another way of safeguarding and regulating the use of power. A requirement of the 14th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, equal protection declares that state laws may not arbitrarily discriminate against persons. Protection of the law means that no group or individual can receive special privileges or be deprived of certain rights under the law. It reiterates the belief that our rights are God-given, and government has no right to deprive us of our unalienable rights. Along with due process of law, equal protection is one of the key principles of American Constitutionalism. In reference to the 14th amendment, Senator Jacob M. Howard, one of the 14th Amendment?s authors, once stated, ?It establishes equality before the law, and it gives, to the humblest, the poorest, the most despised?the same rights and the same protection before the law as it gives to the most powerful, the most wealthy, or the most haughty?. Without this principle of equal justice to all men and equal protection under the shield of the law, there can be no republican government and none that is really worth maintaining. Together, due process and equal protection of law help check  and balance the use of power in limited government. They protect our natural rights while at the same time avoiding interference in our lives.

Entrepreneurship in Healthcare Meet Dr. Williams Free Essay Example, 750 words

An example of a success story of Entrepreneurship is Dr. Kenneth Williams from Mississippi. Dr. Kenneth invested in a hospital which was previously neglected and with his help, he was able to bring the hospital to exemplary conditions. With his policies of entrepreneurship, he was able to improve the hospital such that it started providing gains to him. Hence it can be said that the concept of entrepreneurship is helping the health care field to improve for a better environment (King 2005). However, some individuals deny this fact and put forward claims which are against the positive of entrepreneurship. These individuals argue that the health care field should be a non-profit-driven sector and it should not involve entrepreneurship in any way. They believe that through this entrepreneurship many physicians can wrongly take benefits and make profits that previously could not be generated. These opponents also believe that entrepreneurship would snatch the rights of the community ho spitals and would make a way for these entrepreneurs to attract patients to their hospitals to increase their profits. Entrepreneurship in this sector can provide a way for the entrepreneurs to charge for extra procedures that are not even required of the patient. We will write a custom essay sample on Entrepreneurship in Healthcare: Meet Dr. Williams or any topic specifically for you Only $17.96 $11.86/page But in my view, the positives of improving the health care sector are dependent on entrepreneurial activities. Hence it can be said that entrepreneurial activities should be encouraged to an extent such that businessmen do not take advantage of the sector to make profits. But in totality, it is entrepreneurship that can help the health care sector to improve in all aspects.
